“The last thing that works: Build a System, Not Just a Goal”
Consistency Over Hype.
If you’re tired of trying planners, Pomodoro apps, motivational videos, and still ending your days feeling unproductive… this blog is for you. Yeah, I’ve been there as well, a couple of times — waking up motivated to do my tasks and ending up doing nothing at the end of the day, wasting my whole day. If you can follow this blog, you won’t be this guy.
The whole term “PRODUCTIVITY” has ruined people’s actual routinethat they used to follow. Before this word, people at least did something on their task checklist. But now, the story has changed, with many people, including me. What I used to do was, I would plan like 5 or 6 tasks in my checklist. I would have failed at one, or I wouldn’t have completed the checklist for that day. After doing something like that, I would eventually lose interest in my so-called productive routine and be done with the checklist. The checklist would remain the same for months without any interference. This has happened to so many other people as well, including me. Don’t worry, this is exactly the right time to change that.
Here are some things that I want you to hear:
- Set the right system
This is the most important thing that makes you stay productive. You won’t be the same guy every day. You can’t be motivated to do the same thing every day. What I need you to do is set the right system for yourself to work on. This creates an inevitable attraction to be productive in your day-to-day life.
When I say System, it isn’t about setting your goals right for the particular day. It is beyond that. A system is a repeatable process or structure that works regardless of motivation, mood, or willpower. Unlike goals (which are outcomes), systems are the habits, environments, and workflows you set up to make progress automatic. In short, systems are habits. It is not very easy to break a habit. Instead of giving yourself a goal to be done, make it something you wish to do daily.
Create not just a goal but a habit, which puts you in a loop to do it every day. Later, start habit stacking on these existing goal blocks you have created. Be as clear and concise as you can. Start habit stacking from there.
This has always been the BEST ADVICE for productivity seekers. This is what James Clear conveyed through his book, Atomic Habits. It would be the start of something new if you could get your hands on one of the copies.
2. Set small work groups
Goal: Write a book.
System: Write 500 words every morning after coffee, in the same workspace.
As we discussed earlier, you can’t be the same guy every day. You can’t possibly have the same motivation throughout. So all I want you to do is have small groups, including you.
If you can set this group right, then you obviously become better. Can you remember yourself going to school or a lecture with a dull face, and your face automatically gets brighter on seeing that one very good friend of yours? This is exactly the same thing. You have to find the right people with the right mindset. You may enter the place with the wrong mindset but cannot stay in that place with the wrong mindset.
This also effectively improves communication skills, teamwork, and so on. There are many more things attached to this work group thing. So I definitely recommend you have one — or be a part of one.
Also, avoid people who drag you into some random crap that you shouldn’t wanna be a part of. Try to project why you are important and make that noticeable. This improves the bond between the team. Be in a place where people know your worth — where you are given respect.
3. Set your diet right
This is the last thing I need to discuss with you — and these are also the smallest things. Waking up early in the morning with some recess time before your next work, going to bed early, consuming neat and clean food, and so on. These are small things that are done right in the routines of successful people. And that’s the reason why they are successful and active as well.
You may have seen people enjoying nice, costly food as their meal, but oftentimes, those don’t go right in reality. In reality, food is something that should fuel you in a proper and efficient way. This makes a very big impact in the long run. Also, try and exercise — it also makes you stick to discipline and many more mantras that are good for you.
You don’t need another productivity app.
You don’t need a new planner, another YouTube routine, or a fresh morning motivation video.
What you need is a system — something so simple, so repeatable, that it keeps you moving even when motivation disappears.
A system that takes the pressure off of “being productive” and replaces it with clarity and rhythm.
Because in the end, the people who win aren’t the ones who do more.
They’re the ones who do less, but do it consistently.
So stop chasing noise.
Start building a system that works for you.
And remember:
“You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
This is the last thing you’ll ever need to stay productive.
And now — it’s your turn to make it real.
And for the Chef’s touch,
“A goal gives you direction, but a system gives you momentum.”
See you in the next one.
Till then, it’s Amateur University signing off…
